Brand Activation Alert: Bank of America’s Port-A-Potty Takeover at the Chicago Marathon Delivers the Most Authentic Branch Experience Yet
Twelve hundred branded units lined the course, sorted by deposit tier. Platinum Honors runners received a shorter line and an individually wrapped wet wipe.

The unprecedented Customer Experience simulation leverages key brand pillars: long lines, confusing signage, and tiered benefits based on your combined Bank of America and Merrill balances.
Get ready to have your mind blown by some next-level brand activation. Bank of America just took its title sponsorship of the Chicago Marathon to the next level and created a branded customer experience designed to mirror in-branch interactions:
1,200 branded portable restrooms meticulously designed to give you the full, award-winning BofA experience. And we are OBSESSED.
MoneyHole sat down with Jessica Holloway, Bank of America’s Senior Vice President of On-Site Customer Engagement and Brand Synergy, who was practically glowing with pride.
“Our goal is to meet customers where they are,” she said, beaming. “And our data shows they are often in a queue, feeling a sense of urgency. This activation created a powerful synergy between their needs and our customer service model.”
And the attention to detail is just chef's kiss. From the Grant Park start corrals to the post-finish chute, runners encountered the bank’s core service attributes: realistic wait times, helpful laminated signage about courtesy, and even a proprietary branded scent designed to evoke trust and institutional stability. Talk about a win-win!
Each BofA Experience Center unit was wrapped with a cheerful vinyl decal—“Proudly Sponsored by Bank of America: Your Journey, Our Queue”—and a scannable QR code promising “Priority Relief for Preferred Rewards members.” The QR code opened a page that loaded for seven seconds, asked for the user’s mother’s maiden name, and then informed them their session had timed out for security reasons.

A large banner reassured participants: “Once you’re a Preferred Rewards member, you’ll keep your program benefits for a full 12 months, even if your balances dip temporarily.” This ensured that a runner who started the race in the Platinum Honors tier but finished in the Gold tier due to a market downturn could still enjoy their loyalty benefits at the finish line.
“Our research shows that the branch experience is defined by a feeling of contained vulnerability,” said Chief Marketing Officer Tyler Rimsby during a VIP walk-through. “This initiative allowed us to scale that key brand pillar to over 40,000 incredible participants.”
To mirror the bank’s internal service tiers, for customers with $100k to $1M 3-month combined average daily balances on deposit, a roped-off “Platinum Honors” corridor offered a nearly identical unit, albeit now with a significantly shorter line and a complimentary, individually wrapped branded wet wipe.
The standard queue, meanwhile, was managed by volunteers who reminded guests that the units would be closing promptly at 4:58 PM for “end-of-day processing.”
Customer touchpoints were carefully integrated to guide users through the full Bank of America product ecosystem. Upon entry, a recorded voice welcomed the user:
“Hi, I’m Ken, your Financial Solutions Advisor. Before we begin, have you considered our Advantage Plus Checking account?”
Based on transaction duration, a smart screen would then pivot to a mortgage pre-approval application with the message, “Thinking about putting down roots? We're here for you.” Finally, it would then ask, “Is your cash working as hard as you are?” before presenting an offer for a 5-year Fixed Term CD with a special "relationship-building" interest rate.
“It was a nightmare,” said runner Valeria Voss at Mile 10, clutching her complimentary BofA water cup. “I just needed to complete a simple...uh...transaction, and it tried to sell me a 30-year fixed-rate mortgage and open a new Roth IRA or something.”
And get this: for runners hitting a wall at the halfway point, select units near Mile 13 were even equipped to offer same-day debit card replacement! Talk about understanding your customer's journey. Misplaced your card mid-race? No problem! Bank of America's commitment to on-demand solutions has you covered. We are literally speechless.
The bank is calling the activation a resounding success, and honestly, we couldn't agree more! According to post-race surveys, a whopping 83% of participants left with a “deeper, more tangible understanding” of the Bank of America brand. You just love to see it.
Honestly, we're just inspired. In a world of inauthentic marketing, Bank of America was brave enough to show customers exactly who they are.
Here's to hoping more companies take a page out of the BofA playbook, and start delivering brand activations that are this representative of their corporate identity. You love to see it!
