Who they are
Statistically Unremarkable is the largest household type in the Fabric by population and the only one with no distinguishing characteristic whatsoever. Income is $83,000, within four points of the national median. Thirty-four per cent hold a degree, against a national 37. Sixty-eight per cent own, against 66. They are married at the national rate, have children at the national rate, drive the national number of vehicles the national distance, and are the only households in the country for whom the phrase "average American family" is not a rhetorical device but a measurement. Every other household in this report is defined by how far it sits from them. No product has ever been positioned at them, because a positioning statement requires a deviation and they do not have one.
Our neighborhood
A 1990s subdivision on the outer ring, past the last strip mall and before the county line, where the streets are named after the trees that were removed to build them. Vinyl siding in three approved colours. A hoop over the garage. The house is worth more than they paid and less than they would need to move anywhere better, which resolves the question of whether to move.
Shopping
The warehouse club membership pays for itself on paper towels alone, a calculation performed once in 2016 and never revisited. Target for the middle of the list, Amazon for the end of it, and a home-improvement store every third Saturday for a project that is genuinely finished. The purchases are correct, in sequence, and impossible to build a persona from.
Spending
A mortgage refinanced once at the right moment, two vehicles at opposite ends of their lives, and a 529 that receives the same contribution every month regardless of what the market did. They capture the full match. They carry no revolving balance. The financial industry has no product for this and quietly resents it.
Media
Four streaming services, one of which nobody in the household selected and all of which renew. Local news at six because it is on. A group text with the neighbours that is 80 per cent lost-dog photographs and functions as the only local newspaper the county still has.
Interests
Youth sports at the volume that consumes every Saturday from August to November, a smoker on the patio used well, and a week somewhere with a beach that gets booked the same fortnight every year. It is a good life and it does not photograph, which is the entire reason nobody has ever tried to sell them anything.
Where they live
Darker is more of them.
