Who they are
Rust & Recliner is what a company town becomes forty years after the company. Median age 44 and climbing every year the young leave, which is every year. Seventy-three per cent own, mostly outright, in housing stock worth $168,000 that would be $600,000 in a metro two hours away and is worth exactly what it is worth here. Income of $65,000 is a blend of a wage, a pension that was renegotiated in a bankruptcy court, and disability that is not being discussed. The largest employer in the county is now the hospital, which is to say the largest employer is the health consequences of the previous largest employer. They are not waiting for it to come back. They stopped in about 2009.
Our neighborhood
A grid of clapboard and aluminium-sided houses on a hillside above a river, laid out for walking to a shift that no longer exists. The plant is across the valley with the windows out and a smokestack that is now a landmark rather than a machine. Downtown has a courthouse, four bars, a pharmacy, two dialysis centres and a storefront church. Everything is a fifteen-minute drive and nothing is a fifteen-minute walk any more.
Shopping
The supercenter at the edge of town absorbed the hardware store, the pharmacy and the grocer, so the trip is one trip. Purchases are repairs. Nothing is replaced that can be fixed, which is a virtue here and would be a lifestyle brand ninety miles away.
Spending
The house is paid for, which is the single fact the household budget is built around and the reason the budget works. A HELOC covered the roof and the other thing nobody mentions. The medical share is the fastest-growing line and the pension is the slowest, and both of those sentences have been true since 2011.
Media
Local television news at six and eleven with the weather taken seriously. Talk radio in the truck. A Facebook feed that is 40 per cent people they went to high school with and 60 per cent things those people have been shown.
Interests
The porch, at a level of commitment that constitutes an activity. A garage with a project truck. Grandchildren who are the entire reason the spare room is kept made up. A high school football rivalry that is now the principal remaining civic institution and is attended accordingly.

Darker is more of them.
